The student will be able to correctly enter international classification of disease (ICD-9-CM) codes on a claim form, identify current procedural terminology (CPT), and explain their application to a medical office. The student will also identify various insurance plans, learn the rules and regulations of Medicare filing, translate written documentation into a numerical language and describe legal issues concerning medical records.

The student will be able to translate written documentation into the numerical language of ICD-9-CM for diagnosis/disease classification and CPT for outpatient billing purposes.

-Identify the specific volumes of the International Classification of Diseases as they apply to medical practices.

-Apply the basic steps used to code diagnosis.

-Explain the guidelines and conventions used in ICD-9-CM.

-Recognize the various applications of numeric codes, V codes and E codes.

-Understand and use the tables contained in ICD-9-CM.

-Recognize and correct coding problems and errors.

-Explain the guidelines and conventions used in CPT.

-Identify CPT-4 codes and explain their application to a medical office.

-Locate and use the various appendices of CPT.

-Assign correct Evaluation and Management codes.

-Apply modifiers with an understanding of their importance in coding.

-Identify services and procedures included in a surgical package.

-Define the difference between a consult and a referral.

-Identify and use HCPCS codes for Medicare.

-Describe carrier reimbursement systems.

-Describe insurance carrier policies.

-Identify various insurance plans.

-Compare and define who is eligible for CHAMPUS and CHAMPVA.

-Describe legal issues concerning medical records.
