Professionalism and Communication Skills
This course provides information and techniques to assist the student in developing knowledge and skills in basic principles of communication and specific oral and written skills that will provide a foundation to effectively communicate in a biotechnology career. Students will be expected to adhere to professional expectations of behavior and dress on a daily basis, and participate in the Career Tech Student Organization Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA). Through participation in HOSA and other opportunities each student will participate in community outreach/awareness and field experiences within the biotechnology career. This course also familiarizes the student with the maintenance of laboratory records in data books, preparation of a resume and portfolio, graphing of laboratory data, and the use of computers and scientific literature. In addition this course will address various personal and professional employability skills (soft skills) needed to succeed within biotechnology research and development careers.

Demonstrate the Use of Electronic

A- Communication

1. Exhibit the skills to utilize various models of computers including a PC and Macintosh.

2. Perform essential functions of Microsoft Office? programs including; Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

3. Utilize Word to create documents and data tables.

4. Utilize Excel to create spreadsheets, data tables and graphs.

5. Utilize Excel to plot standard curves and equation for a line.

6. Utilize PowerPoint to create and run slideshows.

7. Demonstrate responsibility awareness in the usage of the Electronic Mail (E-Mail), Internet and World Wide Web to research, collect and share scientific information.

8. Comprehend the ability to print files from various media storage and file formats (.doc, .pdf, etc.)

9. Practice responsibility when sharing electronic files and utilize various means to cite the use of original thoughts, copyrighted material or content authored by another individual.

B. Exhibit High Quality Interpersonal Communication Skills

1. Identify styles and types of verbal and nonverbal communication.

2. Interpret verbal and nonverbal communication and cues.

3. Recognize barriers to communication.

4. Recognize resources to assist in overcoming communication barriers.

5. Report relevant information in order of occurrence.

6. Analyze communications and evaluate the appropriate response and feedback.

7. Examine and report subjective and objective information.

C. Utilize Oral Communications Skills

1. Recognize the elements of oral communication using a sender-receiver process.

2. Apply speaking and active listening skills using reflection, restatement, and clarification techniques.

D. Demonstrate Professional Oral Communication Skills

1. Develop and present a technical subject to peers in training facility.

2. Demonstrate the comprehension of a technical vocabulary.

3. Use appropriate scientific terminology to communicate information including data and observations.

4. Participate in team activities involving creative oral presentations.

5. Exhibit professional telephone skills (greeting, actively listening and closing) in conversations with callers to the laboratory.

6. Mentor, coach or teach another student a training topic.

7. Demonstrate and continuously self-assess the ability to interact with colleagues, vendors and clients.

E. Demonstrate Written Communication and Record-Keeping Skills

1. Model the appropriate spelling of scientific terminology and abbreviations of scientific measurements.

2. Model the appropriate use of grammar.

3. Utilize either the APA or MLA guidelines when writing papers, citing work or referencing research or other forms of documents

4. Develop and maintain a laboratory data book in compliance with designated format and legalities.

5. Create, maintain and store a chain of custody with appropriate data handling, transport or storage.

6. Organize and maintain a personal documentation system for training materials, assignments, projects and evaluations.

7. Create and maintain various Quality Assurance Logs.

F. Acquire and Apply Attributes Requested by Industry

1. Participate in brainstorming and consensus sessions in class.

2. Formulate flow charts for laboratory operations.

3. Formulate graphs to visually present laboratory results and trends.

4. Acquire tools used within industry to verify data and results.

G. Demonstrate Effective Use of Scientific Resource and Reference Materials

1. Use scientific reference literature to determine chemical and biological safety measures for laboratory methods.

2. Use scientific reference literature to determine physical properties of chemicals.

3. Use scientific reference literature as information sources for essays and reports.

4. Use a variety of methods including literature searches, in libraries, in computer databases, and on-line, for gathering background information, making observations.

H. Acquire and Apply Skills necessary for Successful Completion of Technical Reading and Writing Requirements

1. Compose sentences, paragraphs and essays in compliance with Standard English composition rules and spelling.

2. Write customer technical reports.

3. Format laboratory data book entries in compliance with program format and proper English usage and spelling.

4. Compose a thorough concluding statement outlining the results of an experiment with evidence, explanations, error analysis, and practical applications.

5. Organize and communicate scientific findings both orally and in written form and produce clear, concise written and oral reports.

6. Evaluate the validity of results obtained during experimentation and product development.

7. Evaluate scientific reports with well-supported, clearly presented opinions.

1. Format and prepare a professional cover letter of interest for a resume.

2. Prepare and continuously update a professional resume.

3. Format and create a template a professional follow-up letter for a job interview.

4. Develop and maintain a professional portfolio including a career plan.

J. Demonstrate Appropriate Professional Behaviors

1. Wear appropriate or assigned laboratory clothing.

2. Exhibit punctuality and reliability in attendance by meeting the training facilities policies.

3. Adhere to oral and comprehend written instructions.

4. Apply general workplace skills to include positive work habits and responsibilities necessary for successful employment.

5. Demonstrate pro-active human relationship skills in the work setting to include conflict resolution, team participation, leadership, negotiation, and customer/client service.

6. Exhibit the capability to respect the values and opinions of others.

7. Demonstrate the ability to take initiative.
