Surgical First Assistant Surgical Specialty
This course includes surgical procedures for surgical specialties such as orthopedic, general, obstetrics/gynecology, genitourinary, ENT, ophthalmic, neuro, thoracic, cardio, peripheral vascular, and trauma. The student will explore and understand relevant anatomy and physiology as it applies to procedures, review diagnostic studies, pre-operative/intra-operative, and post-operative considerations associated with surgical procedures.

2. Identify complications arising from the use of monitoring devices.
3. Identify the surgical assistant's role in patient monitoring.
4. Review indications for bladder catheterization.
5. Analyze the principles of proper positioning for the surgical patient.
6. Analyze the principles and application of pneumatic tourniquets.
7. Demonstrate drapes and draping for the surgical patient.
8. Describe the principles of surgical instrumentation and usage.
9. Discuss factors to consider regarding operative site exposure.
10. Explain the principles and methods for hemostasis.
11. Discuss principles of use and factors to determine choice of drainage systems.
12. Describe management and use of a variety of special equipment used for surgical patients.
