Therapeutic Exercise I
Instruction will be given on basic techniques of therapeutic exercise and gait training and their applications to rehabilitation. Specific applications to amputations, prosthetics and orthotics will be introduced. Students will identify architectural barriers and make modifications to overcome limitations identified. Practical application of these techniques will be practiced in the laboratory.

At the completion of this course, the student should be able to:

-Describe the physiological effects, indications, contraindications and goals of therapeutic exercise.
-Demonstrate methods for monitoring exercise tolerance and exercise capacity.
-Discuss the concepts behind and demonstrate therapeutic exercise techniques based on range of motion.
-Discuss the concepts behind and demonstrate resistive exercises.
-Discuss the concepts behind and demonstrate stretching exercises.
-Discuss the use of mobilization by physical therapists.
-Describe and demonstrate competence in gait training techniques.
-Describe and demonstrate tilt table techniques.
-Recognize, describe and manage wheelchairs and their components.
-Identify and discuss architectural barriers.
-Explain the physical therapy management of patients with orthopedic conditions.
-Explain the physical therapy management of patients with amputations.
-Explain the physical therapy management of patients requiring lower extremity prosthetic training.
-Analyze the benefits and safety considerations of pool therapy.
