The purpose of this course is to acquaint the student with basic craft techniques which may be utilized in a variety of Occupational Therapy treatment settings. Properties of crafts will be discussed and their application to different populations.

General Education Requirements and acceptance into the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program.
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

-Describe the trend of craft use in occupational therapy since the founding of the profession.

-Explain crafts as occupation as well as the unique therapeutic advantages of crafts and creative activities.

-Describe the historical context of activity analysis in occupational therapy.

-Explain how documentation of creative media is consistent with the general purposes of documentation.

-Describe elements of clinical reasoning in choosing to use crafts or other creative activities in treatment.

-Gather basic supplies and materials needed to do beadwork/wirework and demonstrate how to completes simple and more complex project.

-Gather basic supplies and materials needed to make candles and demonstrate how to complete a simple and more complex project.

-Gather basic supplies and materials needed to do ceramics and demostrate how to complete a simple and more complex project.

-Gather basic supplies and materials needed to do cooking and demonstrate how to complete a simple and more complex project.

-Discuss the advantages and limitations of using electronic media for creative activities in therapy.

-Gather basic supplies and materials needed to do simple magic tricks, make simple puppets, demonstrate face painting and deonstrate how to complete a project from each category.

-Gather basic supplies and find materials useful in making craft projects.

-Gather basic supplies and materials needed to do simple gardening and complete a simple and a more complex project.

-Identify basic supplies and materials needed to do leatherwork and complete a simple and more complex project.

-Identify basic supplies and materials needed to do metal craft and complete a simple and more complex project.

-Gather basic supplies and materials needed to do mosaics and glass craft and complete a simple and more complex project.

-Gather basic supplies and materials needed to do needlework and complete a simple and more complex project.

-Identify basic supplies and materials needed to do paper crafts and complete a simple and more complex project.

-Identify basic supplies and materials needed to do woodwork and complete a simple and more complex project.
