New Student Services Academy

The New Student Services Academy targeted towards student services and academic center staff will be held in Stillwater at ODCTE on July 6-7, 2017.  It is critical that all new academic center and student services staff be present.  This includes academic center instructors and specialists, and those serving as guidance, career development, special needs, counseling, assessment, recruitment, and job placement personnel.  New financial aid staff attending is strictly optional.  We do not cover specific financial aid regulations and/or guidelines.  It does not include math or science teachers whose sole assignment is to an academy (bio-med, bio-tech, or pre-engineering) or who teach for academic credit.  They receive orientation and training through a different process.

If you have a new hire in the student services or academic center area, please email me the new staff (name, position, tech center campus and email or home address).  We will be emailing/sending out details about registration, agenda and other information to them about the academy.  If you prefer, participants can also register online at this time.  The link is: https://nssa2017.eventbrite.com

If you have questions about this activity for student services/academic center staff, please contact me.

 Important WORKKEYS Information:

As stated in the previous monthly email, the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education (ODCTE) will be implementing a pay model starting July 1, 2017.  ODCTE will establish the ACT statewide contract and invoice participating schools and partners for exam usage. The number of exams you use is your local decision. A Memorandum of Understanding for the FY18 Career Readiness Certificates and CR101 went out to tech center superintendents and business managers and other partners.

In addition, there are more changes coming to the ACT WorkKeys world.  The three assessments needed for a Career Readiness Certificate will be changing.  The new assessments are:

Applied Math (replacing Applied Mathematics)
Graphic Literacy (replacing Locating Information)
Workplace Documents (replacing Reading for Information).

We are planning to launch these new assessments in September, as well as new curriculum in CR101 to support those assessments.  There is no combining of “old” and “new” assessments in order to receive a CRC.  The “old” assessments will be available through September 30.   Contact me or the persons listed below if you have questions or need further information.

Becki Foster, Deputy State Director Becki.foster@careertech.ok.gov

Susan Kuzmic,  CRC State Coordinator Susan.kuzmic@careertech.ok.gov

Remember: Learn about this and the other developments at the OKCRC annual conference.   The OKCRC Annual Conference will be Tuesday, August 15 at Francis Tuttle Reno Campus. The conference will cover “everything new”:  WorkKeys assessments, OKCRC 2.0, WorkKeys accommodations, TAO testing platform, WorkKeys curriculum updates/platform and job/curriculum profiles. Registration is at https://crcconference2017.eventbrite.com

  House Bill 2155 (ICAP bill)

The House Bill 2155 (ICAP bill) has been signed by the Governor and the pilot sites will be starting their ICAP process in the fall.  Here is text from the bill that lines out what is included in the ICAP process:

Beginning with students entering the ninth grade in the 2019-2020 school year, each student shall be required to complete the process of an ICAP in order to graduate from a public high school with a standard diploma.  Each year thereafter, students shall annually update their ICAP.  The ICAP shall include, but not be limited to:

a.            career- and college-interest surveys,
b.            written postsecondary and workforce goals and information of progress toward these goals,
c.            intentional sequence of courses that reflect progress toward the postsecondary goal,
d.            the student's academic progress, including courses taken, assessment scores, any remediation or credit recovery and any Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, concurrent or dual enrollment credits earned and/or career certificate(s), certification(s), or endorsements, and
e.            experience in-service learning and/or work environment activities.

OK Career Guide can help document that these services are occurring and can be a powerful tool in helping students progress through high school and beyond.  Our GuidanceFest Regional Workshops will provide information on ICAPs as well.
