Did You Know August 20, 2021

Is anyone else tired??  Nothing like the first “week or so” of school to sap that strength right out of you!  For all of our new teachers, please know….it happens to all of us, and you WILL acclimate!  It’s like anything new—and now is when the “what do you mean I’m not supposed to lecture” at length starts to make sense!  I recall my first week losing my voice because I did the same lesson 5 hours in a row!  And I wasn’t as good of a teacher as you are now, so I hadn’t learned the “lecture” tip just yet!!

  1. Webinar— Please join us on Wednesday, Aug 25, at 3:00 p.m. Central/4:00 p.m. Eastern for this highly informative and lively webinar on hospice care. NAHCA Board Member Celeste Wooten will share her experiences as a hospice CNA and examine why she helps people "live not die."  To register:  Webinar Registration - Zoom
  2. From Starla Ewan, Teacher Extraordinaire, see the tip from her attached newsletter!

  3. Registration for the September 16, 2021 session of CareerTech Educator Conference (formerly Teacher Academy) is now open. This is a professional development opportunity for new and experienced teachers. Some topics include student motivation, creative ways to teach all students, and how to complete CESI and Salary and Teaching Schedule.  This conference will be held in a hybrid format. The in-person event will be held at Tulsa Tech Owasso Conference Center. There will also be a virtual prerecorded option. In-person Registration - $35 Virtual Pre-recorded Registration - $10  Contact Deborah.Swafford@careertech.ok.gov with any questions.
  4. Since part of your objective as a CareerTech teacher is getting students ready for job placement, here’s another approach to consider. An increasingly remote world and a hot job market are causing employers to embrace an out-of-the-box way to recruit workers: TikTok.  Check out the full story from HR Executive here.
  5. The Counseling and Career Development division at ODCTE is offering posters to promote students exploring non-traditional careers….and two of them include our areas—nursing and medical careers.  If you’d like some, please contact Nathan.brubaker@careertech.ok.gov
  6. Get samples of the High School Editions of our two most popular Health Science titles, Understanding Anatomy & Physiology and Medical Terminology, in partnership with F.A. Davis.  To request 30-day digital samples, contact B.E. Publishing through their e-Learning platform, eReadiness.com:  B.E. PUBLISHING | Health Science Sample Request (bepublishing.com)

  8. Ever wonder how you can bring the legislative process into the classroom, and help students understand how it can affect them directly?  If you teach Long Term Care, the National Association of Health Care Assistants (NAHCA) reviews the Nursing Home Improvement and Accountability Act of 2021. This long-awaited legislation updates existing federal nursing home policies that were created to improve quality of care, increase transparency, accountability, and oversight in nursing home settings. We also commend the co-sponsors for addressing serious gaps in staffing; and modernizing critical delivery systems by promoting innovation in the structure and culture within post-acute and long-term care (PALTC) centers. NAHCA specifically supports the bill’s references to raising staff wages, increasing staffing to maximize quality of care rendered to patients, creating innovative approaches such as staff-investment demonstration programs to bring solutions to complex workforce issues. Additionally, we are pleased the legislation calls for Congress to invest $50 million to study the appropriateness of establishing minimum staff-to-resident ratios in skilled nursing and updating those standards every five years.
  9. I know everyone is tired of hearing about COVID-19, however, it looks like this will be a virus with us for life.  If you’d like to bring more information to your students about it, please take a look at these COVID-19 Resources for Teachers and Students from Educator’s Technology.  COVID-19 Resources for Teachers and Educators | Educational Technology and Mobile Learning (educatorstechnology.com)
  10. Please consider going to the 2021 National Health Science Conference, October 27-29 in Cincinnati, OH.  There are two pre-conferences on October 26, on the Health Science Enhancements and and Medical Science 101: Fun and Practical Health Science Experiences.  In addition, NCHSE will host the first ever, Health Science Educator’s Association meeting will take place where our very own Toni McLemore will be introduced as the HSEA President!  You still have time to put together a proposal to present.  There is also a virtual offering that won’t be as robust, but is still better than nothing!  Check out the agenda and register here!  Early Registration ends September 24th and conference registration closes October 18, 2021.  Can’t wait to see you there!!!
  11. From the makers of Kahoots—Get immediate feedback by viewing students’ virtual “whiteboard” where they can answer and you are the only one who sees it!  An Excellent Formative Assessment Tool for Teachers | Educational Technology and Mobile Learning (educatorstechnology.com)

Have a great weekend!
