Metro Tech names Oklahoma City Police Department as Partner for Progress

Metro Technology Centers named the Oklahoma City Police Department its 2017 Partner for Progress.

Metro Tech and the OCPD created a partnership in 2015 to help build character in young people and groom them for law enforcement careers. The Metro Tech Law Enforcement Services program is led by a Metro Tech instructor and a technical assistant, but an OCPD sergeant acts as a cadet coordinator and serves as a liaison between the technology center and the police department while also teaching students about life as a police officer.

OCPD Chief Bill Citty also regularly speaks in the classroom and routinely performs inspections on the students and the program.

Successful graduates of the program are eligible to apply for OCPD’s Cadet Program, which offers them guidance, mentoring and support from police officers.

CIMC offers resources for you

Oklahoma CareerTech’s Curriculum and Instructional Materials Center offers a range of free and budget-friendly resources for teachers on its website, including an employability skills web page of resources to support employability efforts in all areas.

Also on the CIMC website is a web page of products and links for adult education and career preparation. This web page includes samples of CIMC products, as well as links to free resources from a range of organizations.

In addition to these topic-specific web pages, CIMC provides a free, 62-page booklet of resource links to download titled “Websites, Apps & More.” The current edition of this free resource continues a tradition begun by CIMC more than 20 years ago when teachers needed useful websites for instructional purposes. The booklet lists organizations and websites reviewed by CIMC staff and organized by cluster.

Visit the new CIMC catalog at today and check out what CIMC has to offer as we celebrate 50 years of service to Oklahoma teachers.

Oklahoma STEAMmaker Camp 2017 coming this month

Oklahoma students and teachers will challenge themselves in a hands-on makerspace atmosphere at STEAMmaker Camp this month.

STEAMmaker 2017 will be June 20-23 at Kiamichi Technology Centers Poteau Campus. The camp is an intense and immersed professional learning session where teachers, working and learning alongside their own students, learn how to shift from teaching in a typical STEM classroom to creating and operating a makerspace in their own schools.

At STEAMmaker Camp, teams of two teachers and four to six students entering grades five through 12 work together on various modules, such as 3-D modeling and design; circuitry; robotics designing, coding and programming; music production; and wearable technology.
