President signs Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2017 (“Forever GI Bill”)

The president has signed into law the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2017, also known as the “Forever GI Bill.” It is named after the American Legion national commander who wrote the original GI Bill language in 1944.

The legislation contains 34 new provisions, most of which will enhance or expand education benefits for veterans, service members, families and survivors.

One significant provision in Section 302, allows “an eligible individual to use their GI Bill benefit for an accredited independent study program (including open circuit television) at an educational institution that is an area career and technical education school or a postsecondary vocational school providing postsecondary level education.”

This provision will provide the opportunity for Oklahoma technology center programs to qualify. We are grateful for individuals to be allowed to use the GI Bill to experience the high-quality career and technology programs throughout Oklahoma. We look forward to our continued work with the Oklahoma State Accrediting Agency to make this a reality.

Thank you for opening this opportunity for our men and women who have served our country.

Professional development being offered on accreditation

ODCTE will offer a series of training sessions on the new accreditation model for technology centers. The series starts in September and runs through March. Each session will cover one standard.
