Registration opens for virtual For Counselors Only Conference

Registration is open for the 17th annual For Counselors Only Conference, which will be virtual March 9-10.

The conference, a partnership among Oklahoma CareerTech, the Oklahoma State Department of Education and the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, provides professional development for counselors in PK-12 schools and technology centers.

It will include sessions on OK Career Guide, interventions, mental health care, crisis preparedness and response, individual career academic plans, e-transcripts, financial literacy and advanced placement.

Virtual seminar looks at mindfulness and inclusion

The Oklahoma Association of Minorities in Career and Technology Education will host a virtual lunch and learn seminar, “Mindfulness and Inclusion in the Face of COVID,” from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 24.

Kristi Spaethe, president and principal consultant of The People Perspective LLC, a human resources consulting firm, will present the session. The agenda includes dealing with COVID fatigue; emotional intelligence, mindfulness and inclusion practices related to COVID; and multiple perspectives concerning masks.

Oklahoma CareerTech, DPS partner to offer driver’s license tests

The Oklahoma CareerTech Testing Center, a division of the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education, has partnered with the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety to offer Class D written driver’s license and motorcycle license tests through its network of test facilities.

CTTC, a division of the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education, will begin the pilot phase of the tests at Moore Norman Technology Center. The partnership is intended to help provide more test locations across Oklahoma to open appointments to more people.

Central Tech superintendent inducted into Drumright Hall of Fame

The Drumright Chamber of Commerce recently inducted Central Technology Center Superintendent Ron Dyer into the Drumright Hall of Fame.

Jim Martin, Drumright Regional Hospital CEO, said Dyer “checks all the boxes” of reasons people are named to the Hall of Fame: contributions in education and academia, charity and compassion and leadership.

CareerTech director’s column highlights Oklahoma’s system

A recent guest column by Oklahoma CareerTech State Director Marcie Mack highlights today’s career and technology education system.

One of the strengths of the system is its accessibility and flexibility, offering pathways to help PK-12 students and adults prepare for their dream jobs, she wrote.

Aerospace panel discussion video available

A video is available for those who missed the virtual panel discussion on the latest trends and employment opportunities in aerospace hosted earlier this month by Oklahoma CareerTech.

The hour-long discussion featured several aerospace experts, including Wade Wolfe, vice director of the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex; Ryan Goertzen, vice president of workforce development at AAR Corp.; and Chase Beasley, government affairs specialist at American Airlines.

ACTE highlights Southern Tech instructor

Kristal McCathern, master instructor for cosmetology at Southern Technology Center, was featured in January in the Association of Career and Technical Education’s awards spotlight series.

McCathern won the ACTE Region IV Carl Perkins Community Service Award, which recognizes individuals who have used career and technology education to make a significant impact on their community and demonstrated leadership in programs and activities that promote student involvement in community service.
