The state officer candidates each prepare a video podcast (MP4 format) for their campaign that is posted on the web for members to access.

Oklahoma DECA seeks qualified candidates for the State Officer Action Team. If you wish to improve on the following personal assets, you may be state officer material!

Are you eligible to run for office?

To be eligible for office, candidates must currently be a junior or senior DECA member with a scholastic average of 2.5 or higher (on a 4.0 basis) for each previous three completed semesters of school prior to the Oklahoma DECA Career Development Conference. School registrar or counselor must certify grades and affix the school seal or registrar's stamp on the application. Students must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA to participate as an officer.

What do you need to apply for office?

  • Completed Oklahoma DECA State Action Team Nomination Form.
  • Letter of Approval from chapter advisor. Letter of Recommendation from school principal.
  • Oklahoma DECA State Officer Candidate Agreement signed by parent, chapter advisor, school administrator, and student.
  • State Officer Candidate Packet

Put all materials in a clear plastic folder and send to the State Office by 4:30 p.m. on December 16, 2011 with your $100 clothing deposit, which will be returned to you if you are not elected to office..

What happens next?

If all materials have been received by the deadline, you will be asked to attend the State Officer Candidate Screening Session. The screening will be held at the Oklahoma Department of CareerTech Education, 1500 W. Seventh Ave. in Stillwater. Each candidate and their local advisor will need to attend the officer candidate screening on January 12, 2012 at 9:00 a.m.

What happens at the Screening Session?

State Officer Candidate Examination. A written test will be taken the day of the interview. The exam will cover such areas as Marketing Management, DECA knowledge, competitive events, leadership, and parliamentary procedure.

Videotape. While at the screening, each candidate will be videotaped giving a 1-3 minute campaign speech to be placed on the Oklahoma DECA website for chapters to view. The recording will only be utilized if the candidate meets the minimum requirements to be placed on the voting ballot at the DECA CDC.

State Officer Candidate Interview. The Nomination Committee will interview all potential candidates. An evaluation sheet is available which will help you prepare for the interview.

The Nominations Committee will rank the candidates based on the interview, the examination, and the nomination form (including the letters of approval and recommendation, and the candidate agreement).

There will be a possible 300 points that candidates may receive; the breakdown is as follows:

  • Nomination Form (20 points)
  • Current State Officers' Perceptions (20 points)
  • Candidate Agreement (10 points)
  • Letter from Principal (10 points)
  • 2 Letters from Core Teachers (20 points)
  • Official School Transcript-Fall 2009 (20 points)
  • Examination (100 points)
  • Interview (100 points)

In order to be considered a qualified candidate, one must receive 210 points (or 70 percent) of the possible 300 points. Qualified candidates will be notified within a day or two after the screening.

For which office may I run?

Potential candidates will be asked to indicate which office they seek on the Nomination Form. The Nomination Committee will rank the candidates based on their interview, examination form, all letters of reference, and an official transcript. It is recommended that the candidate provide evidence or demonstrate a skill required to be successful in the officer position. (Scroll to the bottom of this page to download the officer packet).

State Offices, Oklahoma DECA State Action Team

This year we are electing a President and six regional Vice-Presidents. The President may come from any of the six regions that are listed in the State Officer Candidate Packet. To run for one of the Regional Vice-President positions, candidates must come from the specific region in which their school is located. Again, see State Officer Packet for more information.

When are elections for State Officers?

Elections will be held at the Second General Assembly of the Oklahoma DECA Career Development Conference.

What about campaigning?

Qualified candidates will be allowed to send out campaign letters and make pre-conference contacts and appearances to other DECA chapters. Campaigning of any kind at the Oklahoma DECA Career Development Conference will only be allowed at the specified time designated by the State Advisor, at which time candidates will be allowed to set up a campaign booth. No food or drinks are allowed. Cooking is not allowed, no exceptions.

Campaigning will not be allowed during the Opening General Assembly. It will be allowed in the Second General Assembly, but only during the candidate's time allowance for his or her speech. Sample election ballots will be given to each conference delegate at the Second General Assembly. Candidates are required to furnish the state office with a resume. Candidates should post their resumes in their campaign booth area. All campaign booths and campaign areas must be completely cleaned up by curfew on Tuesday night.
