2013 NTHS Day at the Capitol

Students from across Oklahoma learned how the Oklahoma legislature works during the 17th Annual Oklahoma National Technical Honor Society Day at the Capitol.

More than 150 NTHS members, advisers and guests participated in the recent event. Sen. Earl Garrison, D-Muskogee, spoke during a special session in the Senate chamber.

Supporting the NTHS mission that “success favors the prepared mind,” each year the organization hosts a Day at the Capitol, according to Laura Harrison, state coordinating council chairwoman from Kiamichi Technology Center in Poteau.

“Oklahoma NTHS partners with CareerTech student organizations to promote educational excellence and higher standards for CareerTech education,” Harrison said. “During this annual event, students from across Oklahoma have the opportunity to meet their legislators, observe them in action and tour the state Capitol.”

In 2011-12, Oklahoma NTHS reported 2,298 students inducted into membership from the 59 active chapters across the state. Chapters are found at technology centers, comprehensive high schools and private schools.

NTHS members are members of at least one of the seven CareerTech student organizations affiliated with CareerTech offerings: FCCLA (family and consumer sciences education), FFA (agricultural education), BPA (business and information technology education), HOSA (health careers education), DECA (marketing education), TSA (technology engineering) and SkillsUSA (trade and industrial education).

“NTHS encourages higher scholastic achievement, cultivates a desire for personal excellence, and helps top students find success in today’s highly competitive workplace,” said interim state CareerTech director Dr. Kay Martin.
