National Office

SkillsUSA's National Leadership Center is located in Loudoun County, Va. The center is approximately 50 miles from our nation's capital of Washington, D.C., and about 30 minutes from Washington-Dulles International Airport. The center was dedicated in 1979, and it sits on 91 acres of Virginia farmland. The two-story brick building houses the national staff of the organization and historical displays and has meeting space for student, teacher and business conferences.

Overview of SkillsUSA

SkillsUSA is a national membership association serving high school, college, and middle school students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical, skilled service occupations, and further education. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers, and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA helps each student excel.

Founded in 1965 as Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA). Rebranded as SkillsUSA-VICA in 1999 and as SkillsUSA in 2004.


More than 360,000 students and advisors join SkillsUSA each year, organized into more than 19,000 local chapters and 52 state and territorial associations. In 2016, 20,365 teachers served as professional members and SkillsUSA advisors. Combining alumni membership, the total number impacted annually is over 420,000. SkillsUSA has served more than 12.5 million members since its founding in 1965.


SkillsUSA empowers its members to become world-class workers, leaders, and responsible American citizens. SkillsUSA improves the quality of our nation’s future skilled workforce through the development of Framework skills that include personal, workplace, and technical skills grounded in academics.


SkillsUSA produces the most highly skilled workforce in the world, providing every member the opportunity for career success.


More than 600 business, industry, and labor organizations actively support SkillsUSA at the national level through financial aid, in-kind contributions, and involvement of their people in SkillsUSA activities; many more work directly with state associations and local chapters. Commitment by industry to the annual national SkillsUSA Championships is valued at more than $36 million.


SkillsUSA offers local, state, and national opportunities for students to learn and practice personal, workplace, and technical skills. These three components comprise the SkillsUSA Framework, a blueprint for career readiness. Local chapters conduct a full program of work, which includes events and activities in Professional Development, Community Service, Employment, Ways and Means, SkillsUSA Championships, Public Relations, and Social Activities. SkillsUSA members also have the opportunity to  attend district and/or state leadership conferences throughout the year. At the SkillsUSA Championships, more than 6,000 students compete in 100 occupational and leadership skill areas each June. These national technical competitions help establish industry standards for job skill training and entry-level workers. SkillsUSA is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a successful model of employer-driven youth development training.


SkillsUSA offers many resources for educators and students. The Chapter Excellence Program honors local chapter achievement around the SkillsUSA Framework of personal, workplace, and technical skills. The SkillsUSA Career Essentials suite is a solution to industry and education needs in preparing career-ready students, who are productive and promotable. Including Foundations, Experiences, and Assessments, the suite helps students develop the skills, attitudes, and values that allow them stand out from other applicants in the skilled labor marketplace. Jump into STEM! provides tools and activities for SkillsUSA members to help both elementary- and middle-school students take part in interactive career experiences. Student2Student Mentoring gives high school students opportunity to mentor younger students around career exploration. CareerSafe is a 10-hour online OSHA safety-training program that provides students with a workplace credential. The SkillsUSA Championships Technical Standards is the official competition guide, with a full list of competencies as well as embedded academic skills.

About SkillsUSA Oklahoma

The Oklahoma SkillsUSA Association is an integral part of  trade and industrial education programs in comprehensive high schools and technology centers. In 2018, Oklahoma's membership ranked eighth in the nation with 13,348 members.  This number also represents the largest membership in Oklahoma history. Oklahoma was one of the 26 charter states to help organize SkillsUSA as a national organization in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1966. Since SkillsUSA’ s conception, Oklahoma has been a leader in national honors and awards. Accomplishments include:

  • Since 1965, Oklahoma’s had 61 National Officers (2nd among all states)
  • Oklahoma leads the nation with the most National Advisory of the Year winners with 4 and the most Regional Advisors of the Year with 13 (which is more than twice as many as any other state)
  • Over 500 industry partners, alumni, and volunteers that support the SkillsUSA Oklahoma Championships at the State Leadership and Skills Conference every year.
  • Oklahoma has the largest Alumni membership in the nation with over 4,000.

SkillsUSA members elect their own officers, develop a calendar of activities, and carry out a program of work with minimum supervision from their trade and industrial education instructor, who serves as a chapter advisor.

Benefit to Members

  • New technology, stiff regional, state, and national competitions, and demographic shifts mean that all occupations will require higher levels of many different skills. SkillsUSA is part of the Skills-Gap solution, because it emphasizes communication and leadership skills in addition to hands-on training.
  • SkillsUSA expands awareness of the personal and economical rewarding careers that can be built on quality career and technology education. Getting involved in SkillsUSA also builds and reinforces self-confidence, work attitudes, and communication skills. It motivates many to continue their formal education.
  • SkillsUSA has created unique working partnerships among students, educators, business, organized labor, and government. The SkillsUSA Employment Network brings local employers and SkillsUSA advisors together in a business/education directory. Direct business participation motivates students, updates training programs, and helps graduates find better jobs.
